1889 Foundation supports Stop the Bleed trainings

Providing the medical education and training needed to save lives in Cambria and Somerset counties is a main funding area for 1889 Foundation. With that in mind the Foundation is proud to support “Stop the Bleed” training with Conemaugh Health System.

On April 3, Conemaugh Health System’s Trauma Coordinator Tom Causer, RN BSN, RRT, HP, took the training on the road to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s nursing program.

“This is a program we are working on to train the future instructors by targeting the nursing programs and encouraging them to use this as community health improvement,” said Causer. “With the secondary goal to have these students become instructors as they move into their nursing careers.”

The special thing about this collaboration and training is everyone who completes it is given a Stop the Bleed kit with the necessary lifesaving equipment and personal protective equipment.

“You do not get a kit if you didn’t complete the training because not doing it correctly could actually harm the person,” said 1889 Foundation Director of Programs & Development Debbie Costlow.

The funding for Stop the Bleed training is continuous and as needed. The American Trauma Society of Pennsylvania also helps fund the initiative.
